My Story

Formed out of a desire to support sustainability on the local level, Future Pastures was founded by Andrew Beasley Baird. On a lifelong journey of caring for the land, Andrew is inspired by land stewardship as a birth right. With early roots in Environmental Science and farming, he went on to have had the chance to learn from shepherds on the Navajo Reservation in a Sheep to Loom apprenticeship with Diné Be' Iina (DBI). While in New Mexico, he spent time on the fuels crew with Watershed Dynamics conducting regenerative forest thinning operations. In Ojai, he helped launch contract grazing company Shepherdess Land and Livestock in its first year reducing wildfire risk with sheep and goats. From having worked on the crew at Symbiotic Restoration, he is experienced in process-based restoration (PBR), an evolving approach to meadow and waterway restoration that mimics beavers. Over the last decade, he has lived on many farms and permaculture communities, coming to understand the complexities of communal land projects. Currently he works as a crew lead with First Rain Land Stewardship Services in Nevada City. He holds certifications with CalFire as a California Burn Boss (CARx),  Savory Institute's Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) program, New Mexico Forestry Industry Association's Forest Worker Safety Certification, Permaculture Design Course (PDC) from East End Eden in Ojai, CA and is a registered California Naturalist with UCANR.  If you can’t find him in the future, you'll find him in the pasture.
